What truths do we ignore, and what violence do we inflict on others and ourselves? What Lurks on the Edge is a visually striking dance and illusion work that confronts the resurgence of oppressive power structures and our role in it.
Drawing parallels to modern Australia, the performance plunges the audience into a world where daily life blurs into violent nightmares, mirroring the toxic realities women navigate. With its gripping storytelling and innovative theatricality, WLOTE challenges audiences to recognise the insidious forces of power and control, while celebrating the strength found in unity and defiance. This is not just a performance; it is a call to action.
As authoritarian structures gain ground globally, the urgency to examine their resurgence cannot be overstated. WLOTE is a timely, fearless response—an exploration of gender, authority, and agency through a uniquely theatrical lens. By reimagining a classic tale of oppression and violence, the work resonates with contemporary feminist discourse and sparks dialogue about the current sociopolitical climate.
Art has the potential to disrupt, inspire, and unify. WLOTE harnesses that potential, challenging ingrained narratives and celebrating the courage to defy them. Through the interplay of dance and illusion, it reframes an old story, urging audiences to reconsider the roles assigned to women—and the ones they can claim for themselves. Its a work that does more than tell a story; it empowers, provokes, and reshapes the future. It is time to move beyond cautionary tales and rewrite the narrative. ‘Be bold, be bold, be too bold.’
